Cool mix

Have been listening to this mix which I picked up from soundcloud recently.  Check it out if you need something new to listen to.

An enthusiastic man

I love seeing people who are genuinely buzzing from music. Here an old interview with Sasha from around the time GU13 Ibiza was released, I presume to promote that mix CD. You can see the passion he had at the time and in the conversation he’s having with Dom Philips, whose book ‘Superstar DJ’s Here We Go’ I read a few months ago (a recommended light read!). The late 99’s were an awesome time for the progressive sound he’s discussing and was about the time I was getting into clubbing etc. Definitely my honeymoon period. There was also the getting away with it documentary around this time that went out on channel 4 but I don’t think this interview formed part of that. I could be wrong though.

Staying visible?

I’ve just read an interview with Swayzak from the RA site which rang true with me.  They talk of the accepted norm nowadays of having to stay visible to stay in touch with your market.  I’ve read so many sources which parrot that in this long tail digital musical marketplace the only way to stay visible to the ever decreasing audience is to provide it with a constant stream of material.  This may be true but it has a sobering effect on the product that is churned out as if by rote.

Music is an inspiration.  As Swayzak say in their interview if you don’t have anything to say there’s no point in putting something out.  Presumably the people that do so do so to make a living or presumably in an attempt to make a living.  I’d like to try falling into the former but the burden of completing and releasing material by rote would, as things stand, be beyond me.

Like I’m sure many other musicians it takes me an age to start, consider, stop, resume, edit, discard, continue, arrange and then polish a piece of music and then commit to an end to this process.  I would seriously have to consider streamlining my workflow if I were to up the productivity.

LSG – Blueprint (ES Waves Mix)

Having re-organised my soundcloud account I’ve made room to post this old remix I put together some years ago which I also used as the last track on the second ES Waves Podcast.  It’s a bit of a hybrid in that I appropriated some percussion elements from a couple of other tracks.  I think it works but perhaps needs some additional work leading up to the breakdown.  Anyways here it is.

The original is a cool track.  Oliver Lieb just had an amazing ear and a distinct sound.

He’s actually just played a retro set of a lot of his classic tracks which he’s posted on his soundcloud.  Check it out

New Album out now innit!

I’ve finally, finally released the second full ES Waves album ‘Parasol Stars’.  I think it’s awesome but then I would say that.  Press release is below.

ES Waves – Parasol Stars

October Bird of Death
Powerdrome

World Eight

ES Waves – Parasol Stars
Released by: ES Waves Media
Release/catalogue number: ESWM-005
Release date: May 30, 2011

ES Waves Media presents ESWM-005 ES Waves – ‘Parasol Stars’ the second full length ES Waves album containing eight progressive electronic numbers.

Parasol Stars is a culmination of four years of production work, a triumph of inspiration and work ethic, which showcases a futuristic yet humanistic sound that both rocks and rolls.  From gentle, fragile numbers such as ‘Elastic Reality’ to powerful jams such as ‘October Bird of Death’ and ‘Powerdrome’ Parasol Stars pushes the sound of ES Waves further into the future.  ‘World One’ opens the game, ‘World Eight’ closes the box.

2006 saw the release of the first ES Waves album ‘Nakatomi Plaza’ released on the defunct Inaspace Recordings label. Also in 2006 the dj Jonathan Lisle asked ES Waves to help out on his OS_0.2 mix album released on John Digweed’s Bedrock Records label de-constructing each track to create several dj tools which Jonathan used throughout that mix.  Parasol Stars is the fifth release on ES Waves Media following ESWM-001 ES Waves – ‘Nean Dreams / Laser Beams’, ESWM-002 ES Waves – ‘Email for Lucky’, ESWM-003 ES Waves – ‘Wavelands’ and ESWM-004 ES Waves – ‘Powerdrome’.

ES Waves Media also presents an occasional series of podcasts showcasing the music and dj sets of ES Waves. These are hosted by podomatic and can be subscribed to via iTunes using the following link itpc://eswaves.podOmatic.com/rss2.xml (retaining the itpc prefix). They are also posted on the ES Waves soundcloud page.

ES Waves – Wavelands
Released by: ES Waves Media
Release/catalogue number: ESWM-003
Release date: Feb 28, 2011

ES Waves Media presents ESWM-003 ES Waves – ‘Wavelands’. This package contains two mixes of ‘Wavelands’, the ‘Traditional Mix’ and ‘DJ DBE’s Bell Mix’ each being progressive house tracks.

The ‘Traditional Mix’ (running at 09:36) is a prog-trance track with a four minute plus intro incorporating some prog breaks before the entrance of the 4.4 kick drum at 05:18. The track has a progressive emotional feel from then on. ‘DJ DBE’s Bell Mix’ (running at 08:40) is a building prog number which concentrates on the effects whilst keeping the groove fairly constant.

Wavelands is the third release on ES Waves Media following ESWM-001 ES Waves – ‘Nean Dreams / Laser Beams’ and ESWM-002 ES Waves – ‘Email for Lucky both released late 2010.

The near future will bring the release of ES Waves ‘Powerdrome’ on ES Waves Media which immediately precedes the second full length ES Waves album ‘Parasol Stars’.

Sasha – Xpander (ES Waves Mix) posted on soundcloud

Just what the world needs another remix of Xpander, well probably not but this weekend I’ve been exploring the contents of an old work horse music computer. There’s at least around 30 tracks on here which represent where I was at technically at the time (the same as now really, learning!).I actually spent some time in the summer reconstituting this computer as there are some really great ideas in some of these tracks which I’d love to use and remould with the skills and tools I have at my disposal at present.Like all things this is time dependent.

Anyway, this remix was completed in 2003 and made within Cubase 5.1 using the awesome PHatimatic Pro plugin and I think just a Tau Bassline plugin (PHatmatic got an absloute hammering from me back in the day.The highpass filter on the early versions has an awesome colouring to it which they smoothed out in the later versions).I’m not entitely sure as I’ve not gone back into the project to see but that’s how I remember it.There’s a bit of a disconnect between the bassline and the track itself but I think overall it works pretty well myself.I remember someone at the time describing it as ’emotional’ which is quite a nice description.Hope you enjoy.

There’s a live set from a little later, around 2005/2006 from which spang a few of the tracks on Nakatomi which I’ll upload in a while (first I may need to upgrade my account first as out of time…)

Bit of a creative pause

Last few weeks have seen a bit of a creative pause.  The third ES Waves Media release is being detailed at the moment.  I hope to have it finished in the next few weeks.  It is, of course, totally awesome but then I would say that.  Again I hope to have some time at the weekend to get the next podcast finished up.  It will be rocking.  The album is hopefully finally in its final shape.  I love it.  Not got a great deal more to say at the moment.
