LSG – Blueprint (ES Waves Mix)

Having re-organised my soundcloud account I’ve made room to post this old remix I put together some years ago which I also used as the last track on the second ES Waves Podcast.  It’s a bit of a hybrid in that I appropriated some percussion elements from a couple of other tracks.  I think it works but perhaps needs some additional work leading up to the breakdown.  Anyways here it is.

The original is a cool track.  Oliver Lieb just had an amazing ear and a distinct sound.

He’s actually just played a retro set of a lot of his classic tracks which he’s posted on his soundcloud.  Check it out

New Album out now innit!

I’ve finally, finally released the second full ES Waves album ‘Parasol Stars’.  I think it’s awesome but then I would say that.  Press release is below.

ES Waves – Parasol Stars
Released by: ES Waves Media
Release/catalogue number: ESWM-005
Release date: May 30, 2011

ES Waves Media presents ESWM-005 ES Waves – ‘Parasol Stars’ the second full length ES Waves album containing eight progressive electronic numbers.

Parasol Stars is a culmination of four years of production work, a triumph of inspiration and work ethic, which showcases a futuristic yet humanistic sound that both rocks and rolls.  From gentle, fragile numbers such as ‘Elastic Reality’ to powerful jams such as ‘October Bird of Death’ and ‘Powerdrome’ Parasol Stars pushes the sound of ES Waves further into the future.  ‘World One’ opens the game, ‘World Eight’ closes the box.

2006 saw the release of the first ES Waves album ‘Nakatomi Plaza’ released on the defunct Inaspace Recordings label. Also in 2006 the dj Jonathan Lisle asked ES Waves to help out on his OS_0.2 mix album released on John Digweed’s Bedrock Records label de-constructing each track to create several dj tools which Jonathan used throughout that mix.  Parasol Stars is the fifth release on ES Waves Media following ESWM-001 ES Waves – ‘Nean Dreams / Laser Beams’, ESWM-002 ES Waves – ‘Email for Lucky’, ESWM-003 ES Waves – ‘Wavelands’ and ESWM-004 ES Waves – ‘Powerdrome’.

ES Waves Media also presents an occasional series of podcasts showcasing the music and dj sets of ES Waves. These are hosted by podomatic and can be subscribed to via iTunes using the following link itpc://eswaves.podOmatic.com/rss2.xml (retaining the itpc prefix). They are also posted on the ES Waves soundcloud page.

Bit of a creative pause

Last few weeks have seen a bit of a creative pause.  The third ES Waves Media release is being detailed at the moment.  I hope to have it finished in the next few weeks.  It is, of course, totally awesome but then I would say that.  Again I hope to have some time at the weekend to get the next podcast finished up.  It will be rocking.  The album is hopefully finally in its final shape.  I love it.  Not got a great deal more to say at the moment.

ESWM – 002 ES Waves – Email for Lucky – Out Now

Um I was away when this came out (in chilly Iceland, beautiful country) so have been a bit slow posting things here about Email.  Here is the press release which you may have seen elsewhere.

ES Waves Media presents ESWM-002 ES Waves – ‘Email for Lucky’. This package contains two mixes of ‘Email for Lucky’, the ‘Extension Mix’ and ‘Mix 3’ each being progressive house tracks.

The ‘Extension Mix’ (running at 08:46) is a moody proggy house set opener with a four minute intro which builds to the entrance of a big kick drum at 04:40. The track keeps the energy level fairly constant from there on in with some nice sound design thrown in. ‘Mix 3’ (also running at 08:46) is a mid set progressive house track with some big sounds in the second half of the track. It has a bit of a bleak repetitive feel.

Email for Lucky is the second release on ES Waves Media following ESWM-001 ES Waves – ‘Nean Dreams / Laser Beams’ released 11 October 2010.

The near future will bring the release of several more club focused ES Waves tracks on ES Waves Media before the release of the second full length ES Waves album ‘Parasol Stars’ early in 2011. ES Waves will return to release another club track in December 2010.

ES Waves Media – 001 ES Waves ‘Neon Dreams / Laser Beams’ released 11/10/10

Press release for the first release on ES Waves Media.

ES Waves – Neon Dreams / Laser Beams

ES Waves Media presents the first ES Waves release following a four year hiatus. ES Waves – ‘Neon Dreams / Laser Beams’ is a synth heavy melodic progressive house track (hopefully leaning towards what would have been described as proggy house in the late ’90s rather than present day, though that is only the writer’s prejudice) with some interesting sound design detailing and is presented here in three flavours.

‘Neon Dreams / Laser Beams’ is the long form track with an extended intro and outro (running at 11:00). The ‘Quick Mix’ (running at 07:00} has a dj friendly intro and outro but retains the same main body as the aforementioned long form track. The ‘Master Mix’ (running at 10:59) is a stand alone track with an extended introduction, grooveless breaks and some nice heavy synths. It was also created before the other two tracks were put together hence it really is the master from which the two other tracks were spawned.

The near future will bring the release of several more club focused ES Waves tracks on ES Waves Media before the release of the second full length ES Waves album ‘Parasol Stars’ early in 2011. ES Waves will return with ES Waves – ‘Email for Lucky’ in early November 2010.

ES Waves – Podcast 5

I’ve put together a fifth podcast.  This one’s a little bit more introspective.  There’s some really really cool understated tunes in here, some nice imaginative stuff.  I’ve mixed it really simply with basic cross overs.  In this instance it gives the music more of a chance to speak for itself, it gives each track a chance to stand on it’s own feet.  I bought the Laurent Garnier track a long time ago.  My intension here is to use it as a kind of palate cleaner.

Hope you enjoy.

Why no blog posts?

I’ve not posted any blog posts on here for a while .  I’ve no doubt that is because the time period between my last blog and this update is covered by the period I started using twitter.  As an update I’m continuing to put together more and more music, constantly refining and updating the music I’m planning to release.  I’m a ridiculous perfectionist and I hope this attention to detail is reflected in the enjoyment of the music that I’ll eventually release.

Really with today’s instant media I should have kicked out a few tracks by now but they are coming and are not too far away!  I had two single releases and the album finished and mastered but I pulled each as I wanted to refine them further.  I’m nearing the end of the refining process and hope to sail the ship in the next couple of months.

Sounding off – why make music when you won’t ever be paid for it?

In this months edition of Sound on Sound the ‘Sounding Off’ article on the last page of the magazine discusses the fact that, in reality, today’s musicians spend a great deal of money, time and effort on making music in full knowledge that they will never be paid for doing so. Effectively the vast majority of today’s musicians are effectively hobbyists no matter how polished or ‘professional’ their technical skills are or how satisfying the end product is. The article goes on to justify why people armed with this knowledge still devote a great deal of time and money to create music and then attempt to sell it in some way. The article’s author’s justification for this is that the thrill of making and listening to music still remains.

As a committed ‘hobbyist’ (see above) I agree with his conclusion to an extent. The love of music still remains for me. The passion I had when I was younger to seek out and purchase exciting new music in vast quantities has to an extent left me. I see this partly as an age thing but the main reason I feel is because I’ve spent so much time actually making music in the studio that to then spend what free time I have to listen to a lot more music would be extremely fatiguing. That’s not to say that I can’t take a break from the studio to enjoy other music. Putting together the first podcast was fun and I’ll be putting together another in the near future (and hopefully another after that time permitting (hence the reason why it’s the first in an occasional series of podcasts)).

My qualification to his argument is the perception that given by the traditional media, well all media I guess, is that the people that are releasing records and, on occasion either touring or playing dj dates, do so as their only source of income. That the myth of the carrot of a professional career is still pushed into the enthusiasts consciousness. I have no idea what take home income a middle ranking artist receives but I can believe it’s not great. I’d be really interested to find out just how people who are marketed as professional electronic musicians really make their living. Money is of course one thing and soul is another but still.

Do I believe that a viable system will be stumbled upon the monetise the sale of music? With present day consumer electronics this dream is unlikely but who knows what’s coming in the future. It’s clear that the success of music is linked to the platform by which it’s consumed.

I should also say that like the author of the article in sound on sound I am thousands of pounds down in respect of the amount of money I have spent on musical equipment, music, music lessons etc set against the amount of money I have actually made from music…
